???? - 1854
Attorney and slave-owner in Jamaica, returning to England in the mid-1830s with his wife Ann nee Bruce, a woman of mixed heritage. George Kirlew was living at The Mount York in 1841 aged 55 'Dividends and Interest' with his wife Ann 45 born Jamaica, and still at the same address in 1851 when he was shown as aged 70 born Hemingbro Yorks. again with his wife Ann aged 54 (born Jamaica). His will proved 15/03/1855 is however silent on Jamaica property.
As a result of the Chancery case of [Edward] Kirlew v [Richard] Richardson, the creditors of Henry Kirlew formerly of Broad Street, Ratcliffe and late of Phoenix Park Jamaica who died c. December 1829 and of George Kirlew late of Union Place City Road who died c. February 1820 were invited to come forward. These men were connected with George Kirlew of Westmoreland Jamaica: Henry Kirlew was the son of George Kirlew of Union Place, and in his will made in 1829 and proved 22/04/1830 Henry Kirlew 'gentleman of Phoenix Park Westmoreland Jamaica' left his property in Yorkshire and at Union Place to George Kirlew of Jamaica, whom he did not further identify in his will.
The legatees under the will of Henry Kirlew were George Kirlew and Ann Bruce spinster, both of Phoenix Park Westmoreland. George Kirlew and Ann Bruce married in Jamaica in 1835: she had been identified as a child of colour on her baptism in 1796.
