1787 - 16th May 1869
Awarded the compensation for enslaved people on Green Valley in Port Royal Jamaica as owner-in-fee, and part of the compensation for enslaved people on Islington estate in St Mary Jamaica, the bulk of which went to his brother Robert Stewart (q.v.) .
Son of Hon. James Stewart, Custos and member of House of Assembly for St Andrew (d. 1824) and his wife Ann Mary. Married Anne Wilhelmina [given as Williamina] Brisset in Bath, 1809. The Brissetts were also a plantations owning family in Jamaica. The couple had 7 children: Elmina (b.1811), James, Robert Simpson, Mary Ann, Josephine, Charles and Roberta. Elmina married first Henry Spooner and secondly Eyre Crabbe. In 1835 James Law Stewart was living at Blenheim House, Cheltenham, where the family remained until 1843. Subsequently, they moved to Tudor House, Tenby and then 52 Norton, Tenby.
Death of James Law Stewart aged 82 registered Pembroke Pembrokeshire Q2 1869. Letters of Administration of the personal estate and effects of James Law Stewart late of 6 Norton Tenby Pembroke who died 16/05/1869 granted 14/03/1870 to Anne Wilhelmina Stewart the widow the relict the universal legatee, effects under £600.
