Biography

The identity of this man has only tentatively been established. He was shown as of St Thomas-in-the-East in the compensation records, but it appears likely that he was Philip Forsyth notary public of Nithside near Dumfries who died there 1837 aged 80, who had been in Jamaica where he married in 1795, and who had a son Philip (1800-1873) born in Jamaica also of Nithside. It has been suggested to us that a 'Philip Forsyth' was the grandson of Ambrose Carter (q.v.) of Barking Lodge and his first wife Susanna Julia Raffles: if so then this must refer to the younger Philip Forsyth (1800-1873), implying that the elder Philip Forsyth (c. 1757-1837) married the daughter of Ambrose Carter. Philip Forsyth (1757-1837) is known to have married an Elizabeth in Jamaica in 1795 while Ambrose Carter is known [from a codicil to his father-in-law Thomas Raffles's will of 1784] to have had a daughter named Elizabeth.
