Biography

Awarded with others the compensation for Farm, Waterworks, Sym's & Paradise and one other estate in Montserrat, apparently as trustees for a member of the Kirwan family. One of his sons was named Kirwan Joseph Fernie, implying a closer connection between the families than a simple creditor-debtor relationship

  1. Co-partnership between John Wincup and Ebenezer Fernie of Church Street in the parish of St Mary Magdalene Bermondsey was dissolved 10/10/1802; Ebenezer Fernie, with 'chambers' at 138 Leadenhall Street, was the assignee of the bankrupt merchant Thomas Mackenzie in 1817; Ebenezer Fernie, Managing Director, signed a notice of a dividend payable by the British Commercial Insurance Company 35 Cornhill, in June 1824, and signed notice of an AGM of the same firm 'at the House of the company' in 1829.

  2. Confirmation of Commissariot of Edinburgh of will of Ebenezer Fernie sometime of William Street Lowndes Square London late of Inverleith Place Edinburgh sealed 24/09/1861. The 1861 Scotland census showed him staying with his daughter Janette Mary Dunlop and her family in Edinburgh St Bernard.

  3. Burial of Ebenezer Fernie at St Mary Stoke Newington 01/06/1861, 'abode Edinburgh', aged 78 years.

  4. Ebenezer Fernie's son, Ebenezer Waugh Fernie, was a pioneer of the Scottish shale oil industry.
