Biography

Eldest son of Sir Peter Payne (q.v.), awarded compensation for the Little Sir Gillies estate on St Kitts, for which he claimed as owner and which his father, having expressed a prior claim, appears to have ceded amicably to him.

School, Charterhouse (1806-9). Matric. from Merton College, Oxford, Dec. 13, 1812, age 18; B.A. (Oxford) 1815; M.A. (Oxford) 1818. Adm. at the Middle Temple, Nov. 3, 1817. Called to the Bar, June 13, 1823. Succeeded as 4th Bart., 1843. Resided for a time in St Christopher's, W. Indies, where his father possessed estates. Member of the Privy and the Legislative Councils there, 1833. Of Blunham House, near Bedford. High Sheriff of Beds., 1851-2. Married, c. 1829, Mary Elizabeth, dau. of the Rev. Letter T71/1609 14/09/1834 from Sir Peter Payne Bart., Blunham House St Neots, father of Charles Gillies Payne: I am the first claimant on the estate in virtue of a marriage settlement made upon me by my father Sir Gillies Paynes Bart of Tempston in the County of Bedford in the year 1789 and I have given it up to my son subject to that settlement, upon certain conditions. By the time the money is payable we shall inform you to whom we wish it to be paid.'
