Biography

Conservative MP for Cheshire Southern (1841-1868) and Cheshire West (1868-72) and created Baron Tollemache in 1876, awarded the compensation for six estates in Antigua as owner-in-fee.

  1. Son of Vice Admiral John Richard Delap Tollemache, who was born John Richard Delap Halliday and in 1821 took the name Tollemache from his mother, Lady Jane Tollemache, youngest daughter and co-heir of 4th Earl of Dysart. John Tollemache himself was born John Jervis Halliday, his mother being Lady Elizabeth Stratford, daughter of 3rd Earl of Aldborough.

  2. Described as a 'benevolent landlord and affable tory politician' by Asa Briggs in his entry in the Oxford DNB on his son, Lionel Arthur Tollemache (1838–1919), 'writer and man of leisure'.

  3. The Tollemache estates in Suffolk, Cheshire, Northamptonshire and Ireland were extensive and included the building of Peckforton Castle.

  4. The children of Tollemache and Georgina Best included, as well as Lionel Arthur, Wilbraham Frederic Tollemache (1832-1904), Conservative MP for Cheshire West (1868-1885), who succeeded his father as 2nd Baron Tollemache in 1890.

John Tollemache’s nephew, the son of a younger brother of John, Wilbraham Spencer Tollemache (1807-1890), was Henry James Tollemache (1846-1939), Conservative MP for Cheshire Western (1881-1885) and Eddisbury (1885-1906).
