Abednego Mathew

Awarded the compensation for the enslaved people on Buckley's estate on St Kitts.

1. The will of Abednego Mathew of the Lyth, Ellesmere, Shropshire will was proved 21/3/1837. In the will, he stated that he had settled the Lyth and Buckleys on George Benvenuto Mathew, whom he identified as his 'cousin', but also more precisely as the son of his cousin George Mathew (q.v.). In 1865 George Benvenuto Mathew, in accordance with the wishes often expressed by his kinsman Abednego Mathew deceased of the Lyth, Ellesmere, Shropshire, from whom George Benvenuto Mathew had inherited Buckley's estate on St Kitts and the Lyth, added 'Buckley' to his name.

2. Identified as the son of Abednego Mathew (b. 1724) and Jennet nee Buckley by the Glamorgan Record Office.

3. George Benvenuto (formerly George Byam) Buckley-Mathew has an entry in the ODNB as 'politician and diplomatist'.
