Rev. John Wilson

1789 - 8th Jul 1857

Claimant or beneficiary

Biography

Awarded the compensation for Olivees estate on St Kitts, when he was identified as of Queen's College, Oxford. The Rev. John Wilson was shown in the 1834 St Kitts Slave Register as having purchased the enslaved people on Olivees from John Proctor Anderdon (q.v.) after the collapse of Manning & Anderdon, to whom the estate and the enslaved people on it had previously belonged. It is not clear what would have motivated the Rev. Wilson to have made such a purchase. He was at that time Bursar of Queen's College, but there is no indication that his purchase was in that capacity: the original claim form gives simply 'The Revd. John Wilson of Queens College Oxford as owner - by his attorney George N. Wilson.'
