Biography

Glasgow merchant, awarded 2/3rds of the compensation for the enslaved people on Jordanhill estate in Trinidad with his partner Robert Brown (q.v.) as owners-in-fee. Second son of Archibald Smith of Jordanhill and brother of James Smith and Archibald Smith (both of whom q.v.). Lord Provost of Glasgow 1823.

Partner in Smith & Brown (q.v.), merchants. Francis Brown of Jordanhills was also a partner prior to his death.
Anthony Cooke shows him leaving an estate of £4,639.
