Richard Estwick

Comptroller of Customs at Cowes Isle of Wight, awarded the compensation for the Charnocks estate in Barbados, the member of a longstanding slave-owning family in Barbados.

1. In 1845 Richard Estwick Comptroller of Customs, Moor House, Cowes, Isle of Wight, 'Proprietor of Barbadoes', was a member of the Provisional Committee of the Barbados General Railway.

2. In 1851 Richard Estwick 'Comptroller of Her Majety's Customs' aged 68 born Middlesex was living at Nelson Terrace Hampton Road Twickenham with his wife Frances, aged 54 born Spain Gibraltar. Burial of Richard Estwick of Nelson Terrace aged 74 at Twickenham 15/08/1857. Will of Richard Estwick of [No. 6 Nelson Terrace] Twickenham proved 31/08/1857. He left his leasehold at Nelson Terrace to his wife for life and then to his son Frederick Manners Estwick, on condition that the latter gave up his own house at 22 Trafalgar Square Twickenham to his brother Gustavus Edward Estwick. Richard Estwick noted that he had leased his estate in Barbados to Mr Francis King for 10 years from 1857 at £425 p.a.

3. Richard Estwick 'the youngest' 'of Dublin and Cowes', born 1784, son of Samuel Estwick (1736-1796) the MP for Westbury and Agent for Barbados and Samuel Estwick's second wife Grace Langford (1743-1784), married Frances Fyers (who died 1883), father of Richard (reportedly - Richard does not appear in the father's will) and Gustavus Edward Estwick and grandfather of the latter's son Richard Evelyn Estwick, who lived on Charnocks in the late 19th century and died at Little Welches in Barbados in 1912. Richard Estwick the youngest's great-great grandfather (also Richard) married in Barbados in 1679.

4. Richard Estwick's sister (possibly half-sister) Charlotte, daughter of Samuel Estwick MP, married John Denison: four of their sons are in the ODNB as 'bishop of Salisbury', 'speaker of the house of commons', 'army officer and colonial governor', and 'Church of England clergyman' respectively. Their grandfather is described as 'a West India planter and MP for Westbury' and 'Samuel Estwick MP' in the first and second of these entries.

T71/898 Barbados claim no. 3207 (Charnocks). It is possible that this was the same as Richard Estwick [3768], Awardee, Barbados 836 £66 0S 6D [3 Enslaved].
