Probably John Shiell (1788-1847), 2nd son of Queely Shiell (q.v.). Age 20 when he was admitted to Lincoln's Inn in 1808. King's Counsel for Antigua 1826; Acting Clerk for the Council of Antigua 1836; Chief Justice of Antigua, 1844. "In 1841 John was apparently living in England for a time and was granted a further 9 months leave from his post on the Council of Antigua."
In 1841, John Shiell, barrister, was living in the house of his parents on Putney Park Lane, age 50, with Elizabeth Shiell age 30, Maria Shiell age 8, Elizabeth H. Shiell age 6, Eleanor Shiell age 2, his sister Eleanor Allan, her children, 6 female servants and 2 male servants.
Father-in-law of Sir Stephen John Hill (1809-1891), who was Lieutenant-Governor of Sierra Leone 1854-1860, Governor-in-Chief of Sierra Leone 1860-1862, Governor-in-Chief of the Leeward and Caribee Islands 1863-1869 and Governor of Newfoundland 1869-1876.
