Biography

  1. Bristol manufacturer (glass and vitriol), son of John Cave (1736-1800) the Bristol banker and Susannah Cox (d. 1806).

  2. Married Penelope Oliver 31/08/1793 in Bristol. Penelope was from an Antiguan family with close connections to Massachusetts. Her father Thomas Oliver (1731/2–1815) was the last royal Lieutenant Governor of Cambridge, Massachusetts, immediately before the American revolution. They had five children, the eldest baptised in St Augustine-the-Less, Bristol, 19/12/1794 and two others in the same church 09/03/1798. Penelope was buried in Henbury, St Mary, Gloucestershire, 08/04/1815 age 44. John Cave remarried, to Catharine Margaret Strachan, in East Teignmouth, Devonshire, 05/11/1819. In 1841 the family John Cave, age 76, of independent means, was living with his wife Catharine, age 50, 2 male servants and 5 female servants at Brentry House, Westbury-upon-Trym, Gloucestershire. The will of John Cave of Westbury-upon-Trym, Gloucestershire, was proved 03/09/1842.

  3. John's youngest son William Cave married firstly Mary Ann Brooke (1801-1848) and they had ten children including: Isabella Anne Cave (1828-1857) (who married James Disraeli, brother of British PM Benjamin Disraeli); Mary Elizabeth Cave (1830-1871) (who married Fulbert Archer, a business partner in Miles Kington and Co, see https://www.ucl.ac.uk/lbs/imperial/view/1837776351), Olivia Caroline Cave (1834-1870) (who married Edward Peach William Miles, son of Philip John Miles, q.v.), Edward Astley Cave (1838-1857) (he died in Melbourne Australia, presumably when he and other business partners were setting up and operating the merchant house of Miles Kington and Co. He died 08/09/1857 and was buried at St Kilda Cemetery, Victoria, 10/09/1857).
