???? - 17th Jul 1865
Heiress-at-law of Louis Felix Langaigne (q.v.), wife of William Burke.
Eliza Burke, age 50, was living at Windsor Crescent, Trinity Road, St Helier, Jersey, in 1841, with her husband William Burke, age 60, of independent means, born England, and two female servants.
The will of William Burke, "now of Richmond Villa, Clarendon Road in the parish of St Helier Island of Jersey but late of Carlton Green Ravenglass Cumberland and Island of Grenada West Indies Esquire" was written in February 1850 and proved in London by Eliza Burke in June 1850. She was his residuary legatee.
Eliza Burke, age 60, fundholder, was a visitor at Carleton Hall, Cumbria, in the 1851 census, in the household of Elizabeth Sarah Burrow, age 36, born Grenada. Another visitor at the same address was Caroline Kerr, age 65, born London. Eliza Burke, age 76, widow, was living with her son-in-law Edward Attkinson Burrow at Carleton Hall, Cumbria, in 1861, and Edward's wife Elizabeth Sarah, age 50, born Grenada. Eliza Burke's place of birth was given as Grenada in 1851 and "South of France" in 1861.
Eliza died 17/07/1865 formerly of Jersey but late of Lion Terrace Maida Vale and Carleton Hall near Ravenglass Cumberland leaving £8,000 in personalty. Probate was granted to Elizabeth Sarah Burrow, widow, the daughter and universal legatee. Carleton Hall near Ravenglass was the family home of Edward Atkinson Burrow, the husband of William Burke's step-daughter Elizabeth Sarah Rawlins. Elizabeth Sarah Burrow reportedly left money in her will in 1867 to Henry Edward Manning, Archbishop of Westminster and later Cardinal Manning.
Elizabeth Sarah Rawlins, widow, married Edward Atkinson Burrow, bachelor, in Marylebone in 1837. The marriage record gives her father as William Burke. If she was really his stepdaughter then she may have been Eliza's daughter from an earlier marriage, although this does not explain why she was given as "visitor" rather than "daughter" in the 1851 census.
