Biography

Awarded the compensation for the enslaved people on Lower and Upper Conference estates in Grenada with her husband James [Octavius Lee] Harvey (q.v.) as owners-in-fee: in fact, they were tenants-for-life under the will of her father John Harvey ne Rae of Castle Semple.

  1. Eldest daughter of John Rae Harvey of Castle Semple (d. 1820, who had inherited estates in Grenada from his uncle Robert Harvey (1732-1791)) She married in 1816 Colonel James Octavius Lee of the 92nd Gordon Highlanders, upon which Col. Lee changed his name to Harvey. Her sister Elizabeth became Countess of Buchan (q.v., under Elizabeth Erskine, countess of Buchan). Her father John Rae Harvey and Robert Farquhar (q.v.) were half-brothers.

  2. The 'will' of Margaret Harvey 'wife of Lochwinnoch Renfrewshire' was proved 04/06/1849 (although it is indexed as a will, the document, which shows her 'of Castlesemple', is a joint deed with her husband James Octavius Lee Harvey 'residing at Castlesemple' conveying estates at Mouswald Dumfriesshire to their eldest son John Rae Lee Harvey and his heirs with remainder to their second son James Octavius Lee Harvey and then to their daughter Catharine).
