Identified as a "Solicitor in the Supreme Courts of Scotland residing in Edinburgh" in the will of John Gregory and as a writer in Edinburgh in the claims for Fellowship Hall and Two Mile Wood estates.
There was only one John Philips/Phillips registered as a writer to the signet in 1834: PHILIPS, JOHN [Date of admission:] 16th Jan 1800. Apprentice to John Macnab. - Son of John Philips, Merchant in Glasgow. Died 11th November 1836. Mar. Euphemia Brown.
