Biography

Clergyman, son of William Appleton and brother of Raynes Waite Appleton (both q.v.), awarded compensation as one of the executors of his father.

  1. Born 05/04/1805 and baptised 14/08/1805 in Walton on the Hill, Lancashire, the son of William Appleton and Mary (daughter of Raynes Barret Waite). Attended the Royal Liverpool Institute and Trinity College, Cambridge. Matriculated 1823, B.A. 1827, M.A. 1830. Ordained a deacon in 1830 and a priest in 1831. Chaplain of the County Gaol at Kirkdale, Liverpool, 1839-1868 and Rector of South Reston, Lincolnshire, 1868-1874.

  2. Married Ellen Wagstaff, daughter of Joseph Wagstaff, 24/05/1842 at Grappenhall, Cheshire. They had 8 children, all christened in Walton on the Hill: Ellen (1845), William (1847), Richard (1849), Henry (1851), Mary (1853), Amelia (1855), Elizabeth (1857) and Arthur (1859).

  3. Living at Kensington Terrace, Kirkdale, Lancashire in the census of 1851, age 45, with his wife Ellen age 30, their 4 eldest children and 4 female servants. At 64 Kinsington Street, Kirkdale in 1861 with his wife, 5 of their children, his nephew Rayne W.W. Dickson and 3 female servants.

  4. By 1871 he had moved to South Reston, Lincolnshire, where his household included Anne Wagstaff, a Boarder, Widow, age 70, occupation “Annuitant” (presumably a relation of his wife) and 5 female servants.

  5. Death of Richard Appleton registered in Louth, Lincolnshire, age 68, Q1 1874.
