John Laforey Butler

London merchant, awardee with his partner Hugh Johnston for part of the compensation for the enslaved people on Palmers estate in Barbados, probably as trustees.

1. John Laforey Butler was born to William and Elizabeth Butler (née Cooke) in Antigua in 1786. He was the brother of Elizabeth Butler (1784- died in infancy), William Henry Butler (1781-1822), Lewis James Butler (1793-1860) (q.v.), and Margaret Pearson Butler (1797-1868).

2. John Laforey Butler married Henrietta Patrick at St Marylebone 24/04/1817. Death of John Laforey Butler registered Kensington Q1 1848. Their son William John Butler became Dean of Lincoln and has an entry in the ODNB, which gives John Laforey Butler as 'a member of the firm of H and I [sic] Johnstone, merchants and bankers.'

3. Will of John Laforey Butler merchant of Bush Lane City of London proved 08/02/1848. The partnership of John Johnston, Hugh Johnston and J.L. Butler of 15 Bush Lane, trading as H & J Johnston & Co., was dissolved as of 30/06/1830 as far as John Johnston was concerned. John Johnston was the brother of Hugh Johnston, the two men the sons of John Johnston (q.v.) of Danson Park.
