Biography

Awarded one-quarter of the compensation with Mrs Mary Cotton(q.v.) for the Seven Plantations estate in Clarendon Jamaica as 'maternal heirs' of Mary Chandler. His parentage has not yet been unravelled by LBS.

  1. William Samuel Augustine Ellis was married at St George Hanover Square Q4 1840; and his death was registered Epsom Surrey Q3 1862. In 1861 William Ellis retired cavalry officer and commission merchant aged 50 born London was living at Stone [?] Villa Cheam with wife Louisa and son William Augustine. Will of William Samuel Augustine Ellis formerly Castle Madoc in the County of Brecon but late of Cheam who died 15/8/1862 at Cheam proved 25/11/1863 by Louisa widow the relict, effects under £300.  

  2. The Seven Plantations estate in Clarendon was shown against 'George Chandler deceased attorney' in 1818; Revd George Chandler in 1826, 1831 and 1833 and estate of Mary Chandler 1838.  

  3. The case of Trafford v. Ellis, reported in The Times, concerned an affair between Lt Ellis of the 9th Lancers and Louisa Trafford, identifed by genealogical sources as William Samuel Augustine Ellis and his later wife Louisa, nee Thistlethwaite.

Messrs Cotton and Crafer reside in London, Lieut Ellis is now in Cawnpore [Kanpur, India], no power of attorney left.  will you allocate money or award it as a whole for subdivision? 'we find a different view of the subject is entertained at the NDO to that we had anticipated'. Statement of Lindsay and Loughborough June 1835 setting out background: claim made by atties; it became clear that Mrs Lushington was not ex parte paterna  heiress at law but Mrs Mary Cotton and Ellis ex parte materna; trust of 3/4 estate held for Mr Sabine Gascoyne, Mrs Sarah Burt, Miss Mary Gascoyne and Mrs Sarah Lushington.
