Lord Holland, awarded part of the compensation under three awards for the enslaved people on his estates in Jamaica, which had come to him through his wife, Elizabeth Webster (née Vassall).

  1. Holland's ODNB entry, which gives an account of Holland's political career, explains that Holland adopted the name Vassall in 1800 'to safeguard his children's rights to his wife's West Indian fortune' but is otherwise silent on the tensions around Holland's position as slave-owner.
