Biography

Son of David Fleming, Glasgow merchant, and Eleanor Park, daughter of William Park, West Indian merchant, and owner of plantations in Clarendon, Jamaica. David Fleming died when John Park Fleming was 6.

Apprenticed to law firm of Graham and Montgomerie; attended Glasgow and then Edinburgh, universities. Admitted to the Faculty of Procurators, 1812; 1813 entered into partnership with Mr. Colin Dunlop Donald [q.v.], though it did not last long.

1 January 1817, became partner with Montgomerie. (Montgomerie married Fleming's sister.)

The partnership was only dissolved 17 June 1868 on the death of Montgomerie.

Fleming's first wife, Maria King, was the daughter of Daniel King of Port-Glasgow; his second, Elizabeth Tennent, was the youngest daugher of John Tennent of Wellpark, founder of J. & R. Tennent, the brewers.

Though prominent in Glasgow elite circles, declined to take public office. However, active in the affairs of the Free Church; close friend of Thomas Chalmers. Politically, a Tory and strong opponent of the 1832 Reform Act.

With Montgomerie, purchased land in 1839 and developed the Kelvinside Estate as a residential suburb.

His son, John King Fleming emigrated to Australia in 1858. (In 1866 he married Helen, the eldest daughter of the Rev. Thomas Hastie, of Bunninyong, Victoria: for Scots settlement in Buninyoing, see also Andrew Scott [ID: 46767].)
