George Hilhouse

One of the co-awardees of the compensation for the enslaved people on an estate in Barbados, probably named Applewhaites. George Hilhouse was one of the executors of Robert Bush, and through this role was probably involved in the claim through a Chancery suit with John Cobham's estate

  1. Son of James Martin Hilhouse (died 1822), and partner in the Bristol shipbuilder founded by the father in the 1770s.

  2. Baptised 06/04/1778 Clifton Gloucs. Registration of death of George Hilhouse Q4 1848 Clifton Gloucs. A George Hilhouse married Harriet Brown 15/11/1804 at Winterbourne Gloucs., but in the records of the baptisms of Mary Rebecca Hilhouse 16/05/1824 and Anna Chapman Hilhouse 08/02/1826 both at Westbury on Trym the parents are given as George Hilhouse and Mary Walker (or Watkin, in a duplicate), while the IGI shows a Feb 1823 marriage of George Hilhouse and Mary Chapman at Comb house Somerset.

  3. George Hilhouse, Richard Bright and Henry Bush (together with Joseph Parker) were the executors of the Bristol merchant Robert Bush [will proven 15/04/1789 PROB 11/1754], one of whose sons was John Cobham Bush: this may therefore have been the capacity in which the 3 were awardees.
