Apparently an immigrant or returnee to Britain from Barbados in the early 1830s. Counterclaims inter alios include: 'A Letter from James Greaves Blackhurst of Haslingden, Lancashire. requesting leave to file a claim for one-third as eldest son of James Greaves Blackhurst ('who married Margaret Hope Adamson'); there is also a letter to Lord Glenelg from Jas Blackhurst of Haslingden near Manchester setting out James Blackhurst's claim to 1/3rd the compensation, 'that my Relation George F Benskin late of the island has removed his family to this kingdom', and expressing Blackhurst's concern about losing out as the claimant to only 1/3rd.
The marriage of a George Francis Benskin was recorded at Alverstoke, Hampshire Q1 1841. No further trace of a George Francis Benskin has to date been found in England.
It is possible that this is the same Benskin who married Sarah Adamson, St Michael, Barbados, 16 Sept., 1824.
T71/895 and T71/1306 Barbados claim no. 793.
National Archives reference CO28/116.
