Biography

Probably John Alleyne Beckles the son of John Alleyne Beckles (q.v.) and Elizabeth Spooner.

  1. Baptism of John Alleyne Beckles, son of John Alleyn[e] Beckles and Elizabeth, in St James, Barbados, 15/08/1810. Marriage of John Alleyne Beckles with Mary Lee Hill, St Pancras 16/05/1836 (when one of the witnesses was John Alleyne Beckles' cousin John Beckles Hyndman): John Alleyne Beckles jun. died 1841 at Fylde, Lancashire. John Alleyne Beckles junior also had a son named John Alleyne Beckles, baptised in St Michael, Barbados, 17/05/1837 (d. Pentonville, 1867). A further John Alleyne Beckles, son of Edward H. Beckles and Margaret S., was baptised in St Michael, Barbados, 22/04/1840, and became Rector of West Chickerell in Dorset: his death was 1878 age 37 in Weymouth, Dorset.

  2. Mary Lee Hill was the second daughter of the late William Hill, HM Customs, Trinidad, and formerly of Barbados.

    Beckles was called to the Bar in England; he succeeded his father as Judge of the Court of Vice Admiralty in Barbados in 1840. In 1841 he returned to England and, six days after his arrival, died there in Preston, Fylde, Lancashire.
