Biography

John Grant Wilson of Bristol, who claimed apparently unsuccessfully for the enslaved people on Pickering's estate in Barbados, was almost certainly the same John Grant Wilson awarded the compensation for another smaller award in Barbados, and probably was also the same man awarded the compensation for an award in St Andrew Jamaica.

  1. Son of George Wilson and Lucy Reynolda Wilson nee Ellcock, born 08/10/1797 and baptised 05/11/1797 in St Michael, Barbados. Married Catharine Juliana Cummins, 20/01/1820 at St Michael and secondly Elizabeth Maynard, 03/03/1836 at St Lawrence, East Donyland, Essex, England.

  2. Member of the Royal College of Surgeons and Licenciate of the Society of Apothecaries in England from 1825. Surgeon to the Bristol General Hospital in 1834. Resident at 17 Bridge Street, Bristol from at least 1836. Of Bridge Street, Bristol in 1850; of Richmond Terrace, Clifton and late senior surgeon, Bristol General Hospital in 1855; of 17 Richmond Terrace and 17 Bridge Street, Bristol in 1860.

  3. In 1841, John Grant Wilson age 40 was living at Bridge Street, Bristol, surgeon, born foreign parts, with Elizabeth age 30, Lucy age 15, John Grant age 15, Elizabeth age 5, George age 3, Henry age 2, four female servants and one "pupil" age 20. In 1851 John Grant Wilson aged 53 General Practitioner MRCSE born Barbados was living at 17 Bridge Street Bristol with wife Elizabeth (aged 40-49, the exact age is indecipherable) born Hampshire and daughter Elizabeth aged 19 born Bristol. John Grant Wilson, surgeon, of 17 Richmond Terrace Clifton and Bridge Street Bristol died 08/12/1860, will proved 21/01/1861 by the oath of Elizabeth Wilson, widow, the relict, sole executrix. Effects under £3000.
