11th Jul 1794 - 9th Aug 1853
Merchant banker, partner in Baring Brothers, younger son of Sir Henry Paulet St John Mildmay landowner and MP, and son-in-law of Alexander Baring (1st Baron Ashburton).
'He became a partner in Baring Brothers and a Director of the Bank of England purely, it seems, through his marriage to a Baring daughter - he had no other connection with the bank.' He was also a captain in the Coldstream Guards and served in the Peninsular War. Married first in 1823 (Hon.) Anne, daughter of Alexander Baring 1st Baron Ashburton; and secondly in 1843 to Marianne daughter of Grenville Harcourt-Vernon. MP for Southampton 1842-7.
Mildmay's son with Anne Baring, Humphrey Francis Mildmay (1825-1866), was a partner in Barings, and left £300,000 at death, as did Humphrey St John-Mildmay himself.
