The dates listed below have different categories as denoted by the letters in the brackets following each date. Here is a key to explain those letter codes:

  • SD - Association Start Date
  • SY - Association Start Year
  • EA - Earliest Known Association
  • ED - Association End Date
  • EY - Association End Year
  • LA - Latest Known Association
1768 [EA] - 1773 [LA] → Previous owner
1791 [EA] - 1791 [LA] → Executor

Acting executor

1799 [EA] - 1832 [LA] → Previous owner
1817 [EA] - 1821 [LA] → Joint owner
1817 [EA] - 1834 [LA] → Joint owner

Shown as co-owner, in fact one-third of the estate had belonged to his wife. NB see the entry for Robert Stewart of Ryton Grove for the derivation of this linkage.

1817 [EA] - 1823 [LA] → Joint owner
1825 [EA] - 1825 [LA] → Heir

Under the will of her mother, Jane Mary Cosens was to inherit a one-third share in the Spring Valley estate in St Thomas-in-the-East subject to the interest of her aunt Jane Thomson for the latter's life or until she married: Jane Thomson married in 1825. Jane Mary Cosens does not appear among the claimants for slave-compensation for the estate in the 1830s, but her uncle by marriage Henry Bowyer Lane in 1832 gave some details of her borrowing from John Mackie & Co. against her share in the estate.

1832 [EA] - 1832 [LA] → Mortgage Holder

In the will of Henry Bowyer Lane made in 1832, John Markie [almost certainly Mackie] was shown as having lent against the one-third of Spring Valley held by Jane Mary Cosens.
