Notes

Originally established on land bought by John Jay in 1653, by 1661 John Holder (c.1611- ) had acquired the land in St Joseph. The Holder family owned the estate throughout the C18th.

'Lease and release', referred to in a number of evolutions, was the lease (tenancy) of non-tenanted property by its owner followed by a release (relinquishment) of the landlord's interest in the property. This sequence of transactions was commonly used to transfer full title to real estate under real property law. It was a common legal device before 1845.
