???? - 1831
LBS has not yet unravelled the Gumbs family. Administration of the will of Benjamin Gumbs otherwise Gumbes planter of Anguilla was granted 03/09/1841. The will was made in 1830 and attested in 1831, and signed by Benjamin Gumb[e]s senior. The awardee of Anguilla 116 cannot therefore be this man, despite the entry in the database. The will of Benjamin Gumb[e]s senior has not been fully analysed by LBS and contains detail on his outside families, but it identifies his wife as Mary and his four 'inside' children as Benjamin; Mary wife of Benjamin Gumbes Hodge; Margaret wife of Benjamin Adolphus Hodge; and Samuel, to whom collectively he left his estate called Upper Quarter in Spring Division. He had at least two 'outside' families on Anguilla. He had property on French St Martin including claims against the French government and the Cripple Gate estate, the latter of which he left to his nephew Benjamin Gumbes Hodge. Another Benjamin Gumbes [sic] of St Martin, described as Benjamin Gumbes the elder, who had a son Benjamin Gumbes the younger (who died in 1785), left an estate on St Vincent named Gumbes (inferred by LBS to have become all or part of Wallilabo) to his surviving children under a codicil to his will made in 1786: this Benjamin Gumbes must have died between the making of the codicil in 1786 and the sale of a share in Gumbes estate c. 1799 by his grand-daughter.
