John Salmon Junior

12th Sep 1799 - 4th Feb 1879

Biography

12/09/1799 in Jamaica to parents Hon John Salmon (q.v.) and (almost certainly) Elizabeth Salmon nee Farquharson (q.v.). Baptised 29/05/1798.

John Salmon Jr. married Frances Charlotte Cooper--probably his first cousin--in London in 1820; it appears that they had married at Gretna Green before this. Frances Charlotte Cooper was the daughter of Major John Maybelle Cooper (deceased before 1820) and Catherine Cooper (q.v.). They had seven children: John Stokes (baptised 1821), Elizabeth Catherine (bapt. 1823), Frances Charlotte (bapt. 1824), William Brice (bapt. 1826), Ann Margaret (bapt. 1829), Marianne Williams (bapt. 1830), and Maria Mulgrave (bapt. 1833).

John Salmon Jr. appears to have succeeded his father as attorney of numerous estates in the 1820s; he operated as an attorney in partnership with his father from about 1823 to about 1826, and then independently. Higman shows him as the attorney for 22 properties (eleven pens, seven plantations and four estates) in 1832 with with over 3000 enslaved people, which made him one of the most prolific attorneys in Jamaica.

In 1824 John Salmon Jr. was a Lieutenant in the St Elizabeth Regiment. He was also President of HM's Legislative Council for Jamaica.

Gravestone in Paynestown, St Elizabeth, "Sacred to the memory of the Honorable John Salmon who died at Kepp on the 4th February 1879 aged 81."

N.B. There is a long list of estates associated with John Salmon as attorney, for which it is unclear to which John Salmon each refers, either John Salmon Jr. or his father Hon. John Salmon (see entry for John Salmon 2146639373 q.v.).
