Son of John Gladstone and brother of William (both of whom q.v.), left £120,000 on his death in 1863, largely received from John Gladstone.
Campaigning in the Walsall election in 1841, John Neilson Gladstone's Anti-Corn Law League opponent alluded not only to the family's slave-holding past, but to the use of compensation money to fund John Neilson Gladstone's election expenses.
