1804 - 1889
Eldest son of John Gladstone (q.v.) and older brother of the Liberal prime minister William Gladstone. His father's Liverpool based firm was heavily involved in the West Indian trade. Upon his father's death Thomas inherited his Baronetcy and the family estate. Educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, he sat as a Tory MP from 1830-1837 and again briefly in 1842. In Parliament he showed himself sympathetic to the West India lobby and provided his father with regular intelligence regarding the political manoeuvrings of abolitionists. In later life was the Lord Lieutenant of Kincardineshire (1876-89).
In 1866 he subscribed to the committee of the Eyre Defence Fund.
