Biography

Ninth baronet, son of Sir Simon Clarke 7th Bart and Anne Haughton (daughter and co-heiress of Philip Haughton of Jamaica) and husband of Dame Catherine Haughton Clarke (née James) (q.v.).

  1. Married his first cousin once removed Catherine Haughton James at St Marylebone 09/04/1814; Will of Sir Simon Haughton Clarke of East Barnet Hertfordshire proved 16/10/1832.

  2. Simon Haughton Clarke was a collector of art and books, apparently acting jointly for a period with George Hibbert (q.v.) in purchasing pictures c. 1801-1802. However, a joint sale under their names was made by Christies in London 15/05/1802 and appears to have dispersed this joint collection, including Salvator Rosa's Pythagoras emerging from the underworld, now in the Kimbell Museum in Fort Worth.

  3. Will of Sir Simon Haughton Clarke [formerly of Jamaica but now] of [Oak Hill] East Barnet Hertfordshire proved16/10/1832. Under the will [made in 1832] he left an annuity of £1000 p.a. to his wife Catherine in addition to her entitlement under their marriage settlement of £2000 p.a. He left £10,000 to each of his three daughters, £20,000 to his son Philip Haughton Clarke, and £2000 to Kitty Clarke 'at present residing at Mrs Becketts' in Liverpool and an annuity of £150 p.a. He ordered the sale of Aldwick [sp?] House Bognor. He left his real estate and estates and enslaved people in Jamaica to his eldest son also Simon Haughton Clarke.
