Of Aberdeen, counterclaimant with other family members on the Granton estate in Grenada as mortgagees. The claim was withdrawn and half the compensation was paid to John Brown as executor of John Ross. Named as a residuary legatee in the will of his father John Ross (died 1833).
John Ross, eldest son of John Ross of Clark's Court Grenada and Granton Lodge, Aberdeen, although young to be included on a list of claimants as of 1834. "He was born on 7th October, 1821, and, entering the army attained the rank of major in the 71st Bengal Regiment. He was subsequently for about 30 years, Chief Contable of Aberdeenshire. He married Flora Anne, daughter of Dr Mackinnon, of the family of Mackinnon of Skye. Of their large family, Alexander Carnegie Ross, C.B., has held several Consular appointments; he is at present British Consul at Buenos Ayres, in the Argentine Republic. Major Ross died on 28th November, 1892. (Tombstone in St Nicholas Churchyard)." Inherited Tilliecorthie in Udny, Aberdeenshire, the entailed estate of George Angus in 1861.
Born in Grenada. At Albyn Cottage, Old Machar, in 1871, 1 Albyn Place, Old Machar, in 1881 and Birsemore Lodge, Birse, Aberdeenshire, in 1891. Census record show his elder children born between 1857 and 1867 in "Punjab, East Indies" and younger children born in Aberdeenshire. At least two of the children (Jessie Emily Ross and Charles Grosvenor Ross) later moved to Canada; Robert William Ross to California.
Death of John Ross, 28/11/1892, at 11 Queen's Gardens, Aberdeen (usual residence Birsemohr, Birse), aged 71. "Chief Constable of Aberdeenshire (Formerly Major H. M. Indian Army)." Father's occupation given as "Fruit planter."
