Biography

Merchant in partnership with Duncan Davidson (1733-1799).

Baptised 10/08/1721 in St Dunstan, Stepney, son of Captain Sabine Chandler ("Marriner") and his wife Mary née Taplon. Captain Sabine Chandler had links to Jamaica and later owned shares in the merchant ships Hannah and Orford.

The ship Hannah, "an English merchant ship [in the slave trade ?](250 tons, 10 guns, 24 men), bound from Jamaica to London, laden with sugar, rum, indigo, turtleshells, 20 elephant's teeth [ivory], sarsaparilla, logwood, hides, and bale goods" was captured "on 14/25 June 1744 near Kinsale by the Spanish privateer Nostra Senora del Carmen (Catano Blanco commanding), retaken on 17/28 June 1744 at latitude 48°N, longitude 7°17'W by the English privateer Old Noll (James Powell commanding), and brought first into Cork, and then into Liverpool. [William Fowler complained that his men were drunk and would not fight; he died shortly after arriving at Cork.]" The ship's master was "William Fowler, Joseph Dominguez after the first capture and James Oswald after the second capture."

George Chandler's siblings were Mary (baptised 1720), Sarah (baptised 1724 and probably the unnamed daughter of Sabine Chandler who was buried 15/11/1726), Elizabeth (baptised 14/08/1726 and buried four days later), Sarah (baptised 1727) and Henry (whose baptism hasn't been found but who was buried 13/11/1732).
Owner of Seven Plantations estate in Clarendon, Jamaica, which he bought from Theobold Taaffe. In his will dated 17/03/1777 he left small bequests to his four nephews and two nieces (the children of his sister Sarah Gascoyne) and left all the residue of his estate to his wife Sarah Chandler. The will makes no reference to any children of George and Sarah so he presumably died sine prole. A George Chandler Esquire was buried in St Dunstan, Stepney, 10/07/1779. His will was proved in London 06/07/1779.

Will of George Chandler of Bruton Street, St George, Hanover Square.

To pay all my debts and funeral expenses.

To Joseph Gascoyne of Barking in Essex Esqr and his four sons Crisp, Joseph, Sabine and George Gascoyne and to his two daughters Sarah and Mary Gascoyne - £10 each.

To my aforesaid nieces Sarah and Mary Gascoyne - all such sums of money as shall be due to my estate for principal and interest of money lent by me to their father the aforesaid Joseph Gascoyne.

To my wife Sarah Chandler - all the rest and residue of my estate real and personal in fee to the use of her and her heirs for ever particularly my estate called Seven Plantations in Jamaica which I purchased of Theobold Taaffe Esqr subject to an annuity by agreement to him together with all the rights and app[?]ures therein to belonging, also my dwelling house in Bruton Street...

My wife Sarah Chandler to be my sole executor.
