Biography

John Brathwaite was shown as the owner of Grettons on Barbados between 1817 and 1832, but made no appearance in the compensation claims for the enslaved people on the estate. This John Brathwaite was presumably related to Elizabeth Brathwaite and Mehetabel Brathwaite, both claimants in the Chancery case concerning Barbados 3101 (Gretton's estate) under their parents marriage settlement. It appears that these might have been daughters of Robert Brathwaite (1723-1791), half-sisters of Hon. Miles Brathwaite and possibly sisters of John Brathwaite the owner. John Higginson and his successors appear as creditors both for Gretton and for a counterclaim against Rev. John Brathwaite (under Barbados no. 4228), raising the possibility that John Brathwaite and Rev. John Brathwaite were one and the same.

  1. The Hon. John Brathwaite as President, Administering the Government of Barbados signed a despatch 17/06/1841 to Lord John Russell. It was presumably this man whose death was reported in 1844.
