Biography

Resident slave-owner in Jamaica, although marrying (for the second time) in Exeter in 1808. His will, made in 1831, was attested in Jamaica and proved in London in 1833. He was shown as deceased in the 1832 registration.

  1. Attorney to the trustees of James Colyear Dawkins on Folley estate in Clarendon, Jamaica, in 1826 and 1829. Assumed due to his 'Esquire' status to also be the William Hewitt who part-owned Cumberland estate in Clarendon (of which his mother Mrs A.S. Hewitt owned a part) and who died at some point between 1831 and 1832.

  2. William, son of James Hewitt and Anna Statia his wife was born 10/08/1778 and baptised 27/10/1778 in Clarendon, Jamaica. Married firstly, Anne Mackenzie, daughter of George Mackenzie (1752-1815) and his wife Anne nee Burrell (1757-1797) and sister of Sir Arthur Mackenzie (q.v.). Their daughter Theodora Faulks Hewitt was baptised in Clarendon 22/10/1803. According to a Mackenzie family tree in the possession of various descendents, the couple had two more children: Susan Hewitt born c. 1807 and William Hewitt (who married a Miss Coakley).

  3. William Hewitt married Mary Stevens Cornish 27/01/1808 in Exeter, Devon, England. Elizabeth Mary, daughter of William Hewitt and Mary Stevens his wife (late Cornish spinster) was born 27/09/1809 and baptised 12/10/1809 in St Catherine, Jamaica. A son, Philip Cornish Hewitt, was born 18/06/1811, joined the East India Company as a cadet in 1827 and was buried in Arcot, Madras, 06/02/1828.

William Hewitt of the parish of St Catherine in the county of Middlesex in the Island of Jamaica.

Payment of just debts and funeral expenses.

All the rest, residue and remainder of my estate real and personal wheresoever situated to my daughters Theodora wife of Thomas James Bernard of St Catherine Esquire, Susan wife of Walter George Stewart of the same place Esquire and Elizabeth Mary Hewitt. For the use of themselves, their heirs, executors, assigns and administrators for ever.
