Biography

Former Island Secretary, awarded the compensation for enslaved people on Bernard Lodge in St Catherine, in right of his wife for five people and as owner-in-fee for one.

  1. Although described as absentee at the time of compensation, he appears to have been only temporarily out of Jamaica, where he died in 1864.

  2. Walter George Stewart's daughter, the author Mary Anne Barker [née Stewart, b. 1831 Spanish town] married secondly Frederick Napier Broome, appointed governor of Western Australia in 1882, and of Trinidad in 1891.
