James Brydges, 3rd Duke of Chandos

Biography

James Brydges, 3rd Duke of Chandos was born on 27 December 1731. He was the son of Henry Brydges, 2nd Duke of Chandos and Lady Mary Bruce. He was baptised in 1731? at St. James' Church, Westminster.

He married, firstly, Margaret Nicol, daughter of John Nicol and Margaret Poole, on 22 March 1753 at St. George's Church, St. George Street, Hanover Square. He married, secondly, Anne Eliza Gamon, daughter of Richard Gamon and Elizabeth Grace, on 21 June 1777 at St. George's Church, St. George Street, Hanover Square. The couple had one daughter, Anne Elizabeth Brydges.

He was educated at Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England. He was Ranger of Enfield Chase in 1753; Grand Master of the Freemasons 1754 - 1757; a Whig Member of Parliament for Winchester 1754 - 1761; Lord of the Bedchamber 1760 - 1764; a Whig Member of Parliament for Radnorshire 1761 - 1768; Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire 1763 - 1764; Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire 1771 - 1780. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor on 12 May 1775. He was High Steward of Winchester. He was Lord Steward of the Household between 1783 and 1789.

He succeeded to numerous titles including 7th Lord Kinloss on 10 February 1746/47; 3rd Viscount Wilton, co. Hereford on 28 November 1771; 6th Baronet Brydges, of Wilton, co. Hereford on 28 November 1771; 11th Baron Chandos of Sudeley, co. Gloucester on 28 November 1771; 3rd Duke of Chandos on 28 November 1771; 3rd Marquess of Carnarvon on 28 November 1771; 3rd Earl of Carnarvon on 28 November 1771.7

He died on 29 September 1789 at age 57 at Tunbridge Wells, Kent from injuries received when his wife inadvertently moved the chair he was about to sit in. He was buried on 10 October 1789 at Whitchurch. On his death, all of his honours and titles became extinct, except for the Lordship of Kinross.
