Notes |
Hope was founded in the 1660s by Major Richard Hope who had arrived in Jamaica as part of the conquering English army. To begin with it operated a cattle mill, then in 1752 a private act was passed to allow Thomas Hope Elletson to build a water mill which was constructed in 1758. The estate was surveyed by William Smellie and James Sheriff in 1782 by which point 682 acres had been added to the estate by Roger Hope Elletson. In 1826 Edward McGeachy created a new plan of Hope estate. It showed the gutter going through Hope and on to the boundary with Papine. The aqueduct can still be seen in the Hope Botanical Gardens and the University of the West Indies. |
