Magnus Morton Herbert

Biography

Slave-owner on Nevis, dying in Brussels in October 1834.

  1. Magnus Morton was the nephew of John Richardson Herbert Esq. (q.v.), President of the Council of Nevis. Mr. Herbert's only child, Martha Williams Hamilton, died in August 1819 without issue. In 1820, following instructions in Mr. Herbert's will, Magnus Morton assumed the name and arms of Herbert. He married Christian or Christianna, daughter of George Forbes of Bush Hill, Nevis.

  2. In 1817 he was the speaker of the Nevis House of Assembly.

  3. In 1861 Magnus M. F. [sic] Herbert aged 34 Capt. Army retired born West Indies was living at Horton House Northants with his wife Henrietta and Sir Robert Henry Gunning, his father-in-law (his wife Henrietta was illegitimate Sir Robert Henry Gunning, although Sir Robert Henry Gunning appeared on her marriage certificate). Magnus Forbes Morton Herbert died in 1918 leaving just under £15,000 personalty, and was the grandson of Magnus Morton Herbert and Christian[na] Forbes. Magnus Forbes Morton-Herbert's son, Magnus William Morton-Herbert II, married Laura Clinton, whose image as Laura Linden actress is in the NPG.
