Biography
Brother of Mary and Sarah Smith of Bulstrode Street Marylebone (the three were children of William Smith of Antigua), and cousin of Richard Oliver Alderman of London. Owner of Revolution Hall on Grenada, which he left to his natural son Richard Oliver Smith (q.v.).
- Will of William Smith of Revolution Hall Grenada (made 15/07/1793) proved 08/11/1794. Under his will his wife Elizabeth received whatever house in which she was living in England, an annuity of £700 p.a. and £150 immediately, all in lieu of dower: he warned her of the calamities to which West India property was exposed, and provided that if she did seek dower, then his legacies to her were void. He left his sister Sarah an annuity of £300 p.a. and his sister Mary an annuity of £50 p.a., and Captain Samuel Oliver an annuity of £100 p.a. He left Sarah Dean 'now living with me' his house in Charlotte Town in Grenada, £100 immediately and an annuity of £150 p.a.: he left £2000 each on their majorities to her two daughters Mary Smith 'now in England' and Grace, then in Grenada. He left £2000 in trust for the children of his 'reputed daughter' Sarah McDonald wife of John McDonald of Grenada. He charged these annuities and legacies in the ratio of 1/3rd on his Revolution Hall estate and 2/3rds on his share of the Diamond estate. He left Revolution Hall itself to Richard Oliver Smith, then in England aged 5 years 2 months, and his share in the Diamond estate to Thomas Oliver and George Griffin of Lincolns Inn as tenants in common. He also bequeathed £100 each to his three godsons: William Smith Glenn, son of Dr Glenn of St Vincent; William Alexander Fraser, son of Alexander Fraser of the town of St George, merchant; and Richard Webster, son of Benjamin Webster of the parish of St Mark, planter.
