James Modyford Heywood

1729 - 1798

Biography

MP for Fowey 1768-1774, son of James Heywood of Marystow or Maristow (nr Tavistock, Devon) and Jamaica and Mary Elton, daughter of Sir Abraham Elton 2nd bart. Owner of Heywood Hall in St Mary Jamaica. His wife's sister married Richard 4th Viscount Howe.

  1. Will of James Modyford Heywood of Maristow Devon [made 02/04/1796] proved 12/04/1798. He left £5000 to his wife Catherine and a further £500 immediately, and £500 to his daughter Frances. He had he said 'lately' sold his estate of Heywood Hall (and the enslaved people on it) to Donald Campbell for £18,000, payable in instalments. He instructed that his English estates be sold to fund the trusts under his will, whereby he left his wife an annuity of £800 p.a. and left amounts of money to make up to £8000 each the money he had previously settled on his three other daughters (Maria Henrietta, wife of Lewis Montolieu [?]; Sophia wife of John Masters; Emma wife of [Admiral Sir] Albemarle Bertie) on their respective marriages. In a series of codicils he revoked the £500 left to his daughter Frances because he had settled £8000 on her when she had married Thomas Orby Hunter [grandson of Thomas Orby Hunter MP, q.v.], and increased his wife's annuity to £1000 p.a.

  2. James Modyford Heywood had inherited the estates of his father, James Heywood of Marystowe Devon whose will was proved 10/03/1738.

  3. Maristow was sold after the death of James Modyford Heywood to Sir Manasseh Lopes (q.v.), reputedly for £100,000.
