Biography

London merchant and slave-trader, shown as deceased co-owner with Col. Richard Thompson (q.v.) of Morant estate from 1740 until 1832. The will of Charles Kent merchant of London proved 13/04/1716 is silent on 'Jamaica property' but includes a legacy of £100 to Col. Thompson for mourning. He left his estate in trust for his three daughters Susanna, Charlott[e] and Dulcibella. Dulcibella Kent married in 1744 Henry Dodwell: 'Mr Dodwell' appears as a co-owner of Morant; Charlotte married John Dalby in 1725; and Susanna married Henry Jennings in 1723.

Kent and Thompson were listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owners of 267 acres of land in St Andrew, 50 acres in St David and 1294 acres in St Thomas-in-the-East, total 1611 acres.
