Biography

Slave-owner on Jamaica, described as 'Jamaica planter' in the entry in the History of Parliament for his [posthumous] son-in-law John Attersoll, briefly MP for Wootton Bassett (who married Augusta Nevill in 1820), but by his own account in his will apparently an absentee investor.

  1. Will of Thomas Nevill of George Street Hanover Square [made 15/10/1800] proved 15/12/1802. In the will he said that John Deffell of the City of London, Charles Edward Lewis late of Powis Place deceased and he had 'some time ago' purchased several estates in Jamaica, viz. Swansea otherwise Mowden Hall, Browne's Hall and Browne's Town, all in St John; and Hay[e]'s Pen in St Dorothy, all with the enslaved people on them, which and whom had subsequently been conveyed and assigned to John Deffell with Nevill retaining a one-third interest in trust, which he left to his wife Elizabeth and their children. In a codicil of 06/12/1800 he left in trust to John Deffell and his brother Richard Nevill the estate he had recently bought at Brighton, from Mr John Smith, both freehold an leasehold, with a new built brick house. In a a further codicil of 1802 he replaced John Deffell as a trustee.
