Biography

Watkin Jenkins of Delahay Street purchased an annuity for two amounts of £50 p.a., for the lives of himself (aged 38) and Elizabeth Brickdale and of himself and Lucy Brickdale (the two identified as the daughters of Matthew Brickdale), on the Nevis estate(s) and enslaved people of John Abel Ward from 1774 onwards, one of a long list of such annuitants for different amounts on different lives, suggesting that John Abel Ward had sold annuities secured on the estate to raise capital. Watkins Jenkins was also shown as now or late of Delahoy [sic] Street Westminster in a 1785 deed documenting the agreement of a group of annuitants (including Watkin Jenkins) of William Gray on the Old and New Richmond Works of Jamaica with Jacob Israel Bernal the new owner. He has not been traced further, although the will of Thomas Hackshaw, made in 1770 when Hacksaw was himself at Delahay Street, described Watkin Jenkins and Matthew Brickdale (two of his trustees and residuary legatees) as of Bristol.
