William Dunlop

???? - 1815

Biography

William Dunlop was Agent-General for Jamaica in the 1790s, and a man of the same name, probably the same man, was partner with Samuel Mure (q.v.) around the same time: Mures and Dunlop were large-scale slave-factors in Kingston. William Dunlop was shown as the owner of Lucky Hill in St Mary in 1790, but it appears more likely that he was connected with the estate through the Mure family (or the Mure firm) who were later shown as mortgagees-in-possession of Lucky Hill.

  1. The will of William Dunlop of Charles Street, Berkeley Square proved 03/04/1815 is certainly that of the partner of Samuel Mure. Although the will is silent on Jamaica property it included Samuel Mure as executor as well as legatee of Dunlop's rent charge on, and free tickets to, the Drury Lane Theatre. William Dunlop left £18,000 to his nephew Alexander Dunlop, the son of his half-brother William [sic] Dunlop, and £17,000 to his sister the Honble. Mrs Boyle. The will showed him as godfather to children of James Johnstone or Johnston the elder (q.v.) and Hercules Ross (q.v.), both Jamaican slave-owners, and uncle to John Fullarton.

The dates listed below have different categories as denoted by the letters in the brackets following each date. Here is a key to explain those letter codes:

  • SD - Association Start Date
  • SY - Association Start Year
  • EA - Earliest Known Association
  • ED - Association End Date
  • EY - Association End Year
  • LA - Latest Known Association
1790 [EA] - 1790 [LA] → Owner

Although shown as owner in 1790, it appears more likely given the later history of the estate that Dunlop was mortgagee-in-possession for the firm of Mure & Co. or the Mure family, with both of which he was associated.

1787 [EA] - 1790 [LA] → Attorney
