James Steele appeared in the compensation records with Thomas Larkins and John McKenzie as mortgagees or assignees of mortgages on two estates in Jamaica. No partnership has been found between them: all three men appear to have been active separately as merchants primarily with the East Indies. James Steele was probably the partner in Alves, Steele and Harrison which failed in 1839.
