1781 - 29th Aug 1859
'John Mitchell of Great Britain' claimed as tenant-for-life for three estates in Jamaica for which the compensation was paid to Mitchell family trustees: 'John Mitchell' was awarded the compensation for the Mears estate in Jamaica. Family links appear to tie all four to John Mitchell MP for Kingston-upon-Hull 1818-1826.
John Mitchell MP (c. 1781-1859). Son of David Mitchell of Jamaica, later of Carshalton House, Surrey and Anne Hewitt Smith. John Mitchell's wife, Eliza, was the daughter of John Elliott porter brewer, of Pimlico Lodge, Middlesex. John Mitchell's uncle was William ('King') Mitchell, (?1742-1823), of Upper Harley Street, Middlesex, and Spanish Town, Jamaica, who owned extensive plantations in Jamaica, and was a member of the Jamaican Assembly (29 Nov. 1798- ). On his death in 1823, William bequeathed his Jamaican property and personal estate in Scotland to John.
Will of John Mitchell Esq. late of Torquay who died 29/08/1859 proved 22/09/1859 by Eliza Mitchell the widow, effects under £3000.
NB Oxford Alumni, in contradiction to the History of Parliament records John Mitchell the son of David of Jamaica as dying in November 1812.
