1757 - 1837
Banker in Clements Lane, the son of Matthew Towgood (q.v.) and Mary Mills (sister of John Mills of Great St Helens, City of London,q.v.), baptised Walthamstow[e] Essex 16/07/1757.
Married Martha Rogers, the daughter of Thomas Rogers, 30/04/1792 at St Mary Islington, when he was described as of Walthamstow. Children Charles, George, Lucy and Samuel were baptised at four different London/Essex churches between 1800 and 1804: another daughter Maria appears marrying William Morgan the younger 04/04/1819 at St Mary Islington. She is described in the ODNB entry for the older William Morgan as 'the beautiful niece of Samuel Rogers.' The John Towgood a barrister not practising aged 62 in the 1861 census, living with his wife Mary P Towgood and being visited by Samuel Towgood a solicitor aged 56 is almost certainly another son. Will of John Towgood banker of Clements Lane City of London proved 19/04/1837.
John Towgood was described as mortgagee-in-possession of Somersalls on St Kitts between 1817 and 1831, with various lessees and 'renters', including Stedman Rawlins and Jedediah Kerie Edmead; he claimed the compensation for unpaid purchase money, having apparently sold the estate to the latter in 1834.
