Mary Ann Howey née Gilroy, wife of Thomas Howey (q.v.), sister of Sarah Marshall (q.v.) who inherited Berwick Estate from her father Ralph Gilroy of Gainslaw.
Born c. 1802 in Jamaica. Daughter of Ralph Gilroy of Gainslaw, Coffee Planter (died in 1826), and Annie Silburn. Married Thomas Howey in 1828, living with him and their children in Lilburn Grange, Eglingham, Northumberland in the census of 1841. Moved to Bridge Castle, Torphichen, West Lothian, by the census of 1851 and at 13 Gilmore Place, Edinburgh in the census of 1861. Her sister Sarah Marshall (q.v.) is a visitor at her home in the census of 1851 and the informant on her death certificate. Died at 9 Hope Street, Edinburgh, in 1867.
The will of Ralph Gilroy of Gainslaw (proved at London in 1826 and then at Durham in 1828) is held at the Archives and Special Collections section of Durham University Library.
